How to get a Rank in CS GO?
In order to get access to competitive mode, you should get private rank 2. We recommend you a Deathmatch mode to get it. Try to get the maximum number of kills, normally 3-4 matches are enough to achieve it. Then you will get the opportunity to play Competitive and Wingman. During Placement Matches in Competitive, you can win max. 2 matches a day. After the second victory, you will receive temporary blocking for 20 hours, when it’s over you can further proceed to calibration. The situation with Wingman is a bit different, you have the opportunity to pass placement matches even in one day without blocking or any limitations. The highest skill group you can achieve on placement matches — Legendary Eagle Master (LEM), and the lowest one Is Silver 1.
It is important to know, that the first 4 placement matches should be taken seriously since they are the most crucial and your future skill group will depend on their result. Honestly speaking, you are going to play your first matches with the weakest players, and if you lose the match, you won’t get the maximum skill group, since the system initially recognized you as someone who is close to the low rating. We conducted some experiments by losing the first match, and then we won 10 out of 10, as a result, we got Distinguished Master Guardian (DMG), which is 2 ranks lower than the maximum one. The only factor, which can influence the calibration result is the sequence and number of victories.

How CS GO Matchmaking Works?
So, you got your first skill group. Victories make your rank increase while defeats make it lower. You can search for a match with players, who are in the range of 5 ranks from you (higher or lower). Otherwise, you will have to gather a team of 5 people.
The rating icon will disappear in one month since the last match. Once the skill group has disappeared, you should win 1 match. Most likely, you will receive a skill group that will be lower on 1-2 ranks than before. Once you get your rank back, that’s quite easy to get your old one as well. It is enough to win two times in a row.
If you abandon a match, then you receive temporary blocking. There are 4 levels of punishments for abandoning matches — 30 min, 2 hours, 24 hours, and a 1-week ban. A week of gaming without violations can decrease your future ban time.
There are punishments if you are often kicked off the matches or you kick off other people from them. They are working on the same principle as punishments for abandoning matches.
Punishment for kicking and leaving can have a negative impact on your elo. Your rating can get lower for any blocking.
How to Rank Up?
Actually, everything is quite simple. Play your best and try to win as many matches in a row as possible to raise your rating. However, the more matches you play having one skill group, the more likely system will consider you a proper player and it will be harder to rank up. (Systems Elo and Glicko-2 are telling us about this).

Learn some new nades, like smokes, flashes, and incendiary grenades. All of this may have a significant impact on the gaming process, can help your team, and let you cheat opponents in a smart manner.
Never play CSGO solo We advise you to avoid playing matchmaking solo. Nowadays, it is quite easy to find teammates, who will have the same desire as you to progress and increase their skill group. Playing solo, you are imposed to a higher risk of meeting toxic people, who won’t provide any info during the game, who will play halfheartedly (with no desire to win, etc). You will have only negative experiences playing with such people. Playing with friends you will have at least some common interest and information about what is going on the map, which significantly increases your odds to win.

In case you did not excel in shooting your enemy or you moved across the map not good enough — all of these can be a good reasons to work on your personal skills. If your ally decided to ruin amidst the game or simply abandon it — most likely you could actually do nothing in that situation, just forget about this game and keep moving forward. CS:GO Ranks – Competitive Skill Groups
CS:GO Ranks or skill groups, is a way of pairing you with other players when playing in competitive matchmaking. It’s like the ELO rating, where you get a rating. Depending on your rating, you will be set up against players with the same rating/skills as yourself. If you keep winning against the other team, the system will notice and put you in a higher skill group. The algorithms for calculating the skill group is not known though, so how exactly you rank up is unknown. If you haven’t played competitive matchmaking yet, you will need to WIN 10 matches to be displayed in a skill group.

Ranking Method
The ranking method is as before mentioned unknown. But based on experience, we can tell you a little bit of how it works. Your rank can be increased or decreased every round. Loosing one round will normally not decrease your rank – the system is made so that over a period of time, you should on average win 50% of the time (this is based on players experience). If you keep loosing, the system will put you in a lower skill group.
Another thing to notice, is that winning against players in a higher skill group seems to benefit your rating more positively than winning against an equal skill group. Loosing against a lower skill group will then have a bigger negative impact on the rating. One thing I noticed, is that if you keep winning and being on top of the scoreboard, the system will put you against higher ranked players. In my opinion this is to test if you should be placed in a higher skill group before actually changing the skill group. This way, it will take longer to decrease or increase the rank. This is good IMO, because you will not be de-ranked for having a bad day and makes the system more consistent.

A. Like an Elo rating in Chess, the CS:GO competitive Skill Groups predict how well players will perform when playing against other players. Two equally skilled teams should, on average, win an equal number of matches when competing against each other.
Q. Where can I see my own Skill Group?
A. Once your Skill Group has settled and you have won 10 competitive matches, your Skill Group will be displayed on the main menu.

A. Absolutely. Competitive matchmaking will match you with other players of similar skill, which is more likely to result in a fun match than jumping into a random game.
Q. Should I avoid partying with lower skilled friends because they will hurt my rating?
A. No. Firstly, the matchmaking system will take your lower-skilled friend into consideration when finding a match. And second, the system makes a prediction about how well each team member will perform in a match. So losing a match with a lower skilled player on your team is not likely to significantly impact your Skill Group. If you always play your best then your Skill Group will provide you with well matched teammates and opponents.
Q. How can you predict my skill in only winning 10 games?
A. When you play your first game, we have no idea what your skill is. As you play more games, we use those wins and losses to make predictions about what Skill Group we think you should be in. The more games you play, the more confident the system is in predicting who the other players are that you should be playing against. Winning 10 games gives us enough data to confidently place you in a Skill Group where we think you’ll be matched up with others matching your skill level.
Q. When are Skill Group emblems shown in the scoreboard?
A. Players with settled Skill Groups will display their emblem to their friends at all times. At the end of the match, after the last rematch, any player with a settled Skill Group will display it to everyone else.
Q. Why do I see a range of Skill Groups in the end-of-match scoreboard? Shouldn’t everyone in a match have the same Skill Group?
A. Most matches have a small range of Skill Groups represented. If you see a larger range of Skill Groups then it is likely that those players came into the match as a party.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has a convenient in-game matchmaking system available to all players. First introduced in 2012, CS:GO’s ranked matchmaking system offers players the opportunity to compete for a skill rank.
Compared to the casual game modes, ranked matchmaking is taken more seriously. Furthermore, you’ll find that your teammates expect a particular level of teamwork and skill, especially at higher ranks.
It’s no secret that CS:GO’s ranking system can be hard to navigate. No one knows all the details, and Valve isn’t known for sharing all its secrets. However, our guide will teach you everything you need to know about the different ranks and matchmaking systems.
What are the different types of matchmaking?
There are two types of matchmaking types in CS:GO: ranked and unranked. In the first type, players are matched into a lobby based on their skill group. Moreover, a player’s skill group (rank) can be seen. When playing with friends, ranked matchmaking is far more restrictive. To keep matches fair and competitive, Valve only allows players to queue with others within five ranks of their skill group. That means a player can play with someone five ranks higher or lower than themself. An exception to this rule is when five players queue together. Players of any rank can play together as long as they are queueing in a full group of five. Also, ranked game modes are only available to players that have Prime status.
On the other hand, in unranked a player’s skill is based on their performance. However, their skill group is not public. Furthermore, there aren’t restrictions on skill groups for players that are grouping together. Players who do not have Prime status are able to play unranked with no issues.
What game types have competitive skill groups?
Each game mode has a ranked and unranked option. Therefore, Competitive, Wingman and Danger Zone have ranked skill groups. Below are the skill groups for each ranked game mode. The skill groups increase from left to right.

How do I get a CS:GO rank?
To get an accurate CS:GO rank, the game’s matchmaking system has to collect some performance data over several games. Players new to ranked need to win 10 competitive placement matches. This doesn’t mean that you have to simply play 10 matches, but that you need to win 10 matches.
When starting out, you will not be able to win more than two ranked matches per day. Also, you will not be able to join a competitive queue with someone who is ranked Master Guardian II or higher, unless you are in a full group of five.
Once you’ve won your first 10 ranked games, you will be assigned a rank between Silver I and Legendary Eagle Master. After being placed in your skill group, you are free to win more than two games per day.
At first, your skill group might not reflect your skill. Perhaps the system placed you a bit higher than your skill level or maybe lower. As you continue playing though, you’ll eventually win or lose enough games to settle your appropriate rank.
There’s no way for players to know how many games they have to win or lose to move up or down into a lower skill group. However, there are two game modes Wingman (Operation Hydra Only) and Weapons Experts (Operation Hydra Only) in which players are able to see how many matches they need to win to rank up.
You will be removed from your skill group if you don’t play any ranked matches for one month. To be placed into a skill group again, you’ll have to tie or win a ranked game. If you’ve been inactive for longer than a month, you’ll more than likely be placed into a lower skill group. However, it’s not uncommon for players to place in the same skill group they were in before their rank expired.
How does CS:GO calculate when I rank up or down?
Unfortunately, Valve has not been the most public in regard to how exactly a player's performance, win streaks, or other factors affect their rank. Initially, to rank up it’s pretty simple- win! However, as you continue to play, you’ll eventually notice it’s extremely difficult to rank up.
Players have reported winning several games in a row without ranking up, and then losing two to find themselves in a lower skill group. This phenomenon has driven the community to decipher CS:GO’s inconsistent and somewhat volatile matchmaking system.
Several years ago, a Valve Employee gave players insight into how ranks are determined in the backend. They explained CS:GO’s ranked matchmaking skill groups are based on the Glicko-2 rating model. The employee clarified a player’s skill group is determined by “multiple matchmaking parameters,” and that their “complex competitive matchmaking parameters cannot be represented as a single numeric value.”
Since we know that CS:GO’s skill groups are based on the Glicko-2 rating system there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re trying to rank up.
- The more games you play in a skill group, the harder it will be for you to rank up or down
- If you reach a particular rank and then do not improve, the algorithm thinks you’ve reached your appropriate rank, which makes ranking up more difficult.
- Valve’s employee stated there are many factors taken into consideration when it comes to calculating rank. Therefore, it won’t do you any good to simply run around and try to get as many kills as possible.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Ranking System
The ranking system in Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) is one of the most competitive ranking systems online today. It truly tests your wits and puts you in an appropriate bracket based on your skill. CS: GO has a separate ranked matchmaking playlist where you can rank up or down based on your in-game performance.
These skill groups are (lowest to highest with common abbreviations):

Even if you are a Gold Nova I, you are considered «too good» at CS: GO. This is how competitive the skill group gets as you rank up (i.e. Gold Nova I is exceptionally high skill level). The ranking system of CS: GO is based on the Elo rating system, a method for calculating players’ relative skill levels, similar to how it is done in Chess.
The Global Elite pool contains a handful of players who have mastered this game to another level. These guys are highly skilled and won’t even give other players a chance to pull the trigger.
Ranking Up
When you first jump into CS: GO, you won’t be in any of the above-mentioned skill groups. You can normally see your skill group displayed next to your name in party lobbies, scoreboards, and even the main menu screen.
To get your first rank, you must first reach Private Rank 2 in CS: GO by playing casual matches or deathmatch. Once you’ve reached Private Rank 2, you will be able to play competitive games.
Once you reach Private Rank 2, jump into one of the competitive matches, and play at least ten matches. You must finish all ten to receive your first rank.
Note that if you take an extended break from CS: GO competitive matchmaking, the skill group is not visible on your profile. In order to get it back, you must win at least one game after for the system to recalibrate your rank and put you in a skill group based on that.
Profile Rank VS Competitive Skill Group
Profile rank is completely different from the competitive skill group. Profile rank is displayed above your competitive skill group, and it increases based on your match XP. You can earn match XP by playing either casual matches or competitive. However, to be eligible for match XP in competitive, you must complete the full match. The max possible profile rank is 40.
Once you reach max level 40, you can also get a service medal, but that is only possible after trading in your 40 levels. You will then need to reach Private Rank 2 again to enter competitive matchmaking. You can repeat and get another service medal by reaching level 40. This is similar to the prestige system seen in the Call of Duty games.
Your competitive skill group is assigned based on your competitive matchmaking alone. The competitive rank can either increase or decrease based on your in-game performance.
Best Way to Rank Up
In CS: GO, the only best way to rank up is by winning competitive matches. You need to win at least 5-6 consecutive matches to rank up, albeit this is not always the case since there are other factors to be considered.
If you finish 5-6 games with the highest score in your team, you will have higher chances of ranking up. This means you should get MVPs (Most Valuable Player) in the matches with at least 1+ K/D (Kill/Death Ratio).
Another method that can help you rank up fast is by playing with players in a higher competitive skill group than you. This is technically «boosting,» but it is highly effective if you win games while playing with higher skill groups.
CS: GO Ranks Distribution 2020
As mentioned before, the competitive ranking in CS: GO is based purely on your skillset. You can see a graph below that shows CS: GO ranks’ distribution in 2020. This is the latest graph provided by csgo-stats.com.
As you can see in the above distribution, Gold Nova II (8.81%) and III (8.73%) make up the majority of the total CS: GO players in 2020, followed by Gold Nova I (8.52%) and Gold Nova Master (8.17%). The Gold Nova tier I to Master comprises of over 34% of the players. This is highly unusual to see, as Gold Nova is more of a higher tier group. More populated tiers should have been the common Silver tiers.
After the Gold Nova tiers, we have Master Guardian I with 7.39%, Master Guardian II with 6.30%, and Master Guardian Elite with 5.25%. You will notice that after Gold Nova Master, the percentage of players keeps declining moving forward towards Master Guardian Elite and beyond.
Silver tiers are certainly not behind when it comes to being common, as the Silver pool constitutes exactly 33% of the total player base in 2020, with Silver 1 sitting at 4.51%, Silver II at 4.33%, Silver III at 4.39%, Silver IV at 5.37%, Silver Elite at 6.70% and Silver Elite Master at 7.70%. It is just 1% less than the Gold tier. Out of all the Silver groups, Silver Elite Master is at the top with 7.70% and Silver II with the least percentage of 4.33%.
Let’s turn to the top tiers with the least number of players out of all the competitive skill groups. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these skill groups have the least number of players, for it takes hundreds or thousands of hours of practice, on top of complete dedication to this game.
The top tier skill groups’ percentages include Distinguished Master Guardian with 4.07%, Legendary Eagle with 3.16%, Legendary Eagle Master with 3.19%, Supreme Master First Class with 2.61%, and finally The Global Elite with an understandable 0.78%. The top tier skill group only accounts for over 13% of the total player base, with less than 1% for the highest skill group, The Global Elite.
As mentioned before, this game truly tests your wits and skills. And to be the best in CS: GO, you have to put in the work. Getting to the top skill group is a true definition of hard work and grind. Earning that Global Elite icon is an achievement in itself that truly qualifies you for bragging rights!
